Tonga comprises 176 islands spread over more than 400 kilometres so getting around can be difficult. Of the 176 islands only 36 islands are inhabited and the greatest number of people living on the main island groups of Tongatapu and 'Eua in the south, Ha'apai in the middle, Vava'u in the north and much further north again to Niuatoputapu and Niuafo'ou.
Air New Zealand, Air Pacific, Pacific Blue and Air Fiji all provide international services into Tonga. Air Chathams Pacifc, The Friendly Islands Airways and Airlines Tonga (in association with Air Fiji) provide the domestic service.
Air Chathams Pacific fly a Comvair580 which is a 50-seat aircraft and they fly between the major islands of Vava'u, Ha'apai and Tongatapu within the Kingdom of Tonga. Airlines Tonga also fly to Vava'u from Tongatapu and Ha'apai . The flight time from Tongatapu to Vava'u is approximately 1 hour with up to 4 flights a day, except Sundays.

There are weekly ferries to Vava'u from Tongatapu. These ferries , (The "Olovaha" & The "Pulupaki"), also stop at the Ha'apai group on the way north to Vava'u.

Air Pacific is the international airline connecting Tonga with Fiji and offers the following services;
Australia to Tonga:
Air Pacific flies from Brisbane and Sydney to Fiji with connecting flights to Tonga from Nadi on Tuesday and Thursday.
Fiji to Tonga:
Air Pacific offers a Suva to Tonga return air service two times a week on Wednesdays and Fridays. They fly from Nadi to Tonga return on Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays. These flights continue on from Nadi to Honolulu and to Los Angeles.
USA to Tonga:
Air Pacific operates three times a week from Honolulu and Los Angeles to Nadi, Fiji. Direct flights to Tonga are also available three times a week from Suva and Nadi, Fiji with Air Pacific.
